Renowned Pastor John Gray is hospitalized in a Greenville, South Carolina hospital with a life-threatening pulmonary embolism that could end his life with even the slightest movement. His wife and followers are praying for a miracle and have enlisted the whole of the Christian community in their efforts.
Gray—who leads the Relentless Church in Greenville and Powder Springs, Georgia—sought emergency care on Thursday after complaining of feeling ill.
“He was immediately admitted to CCU with a saddle Pulmonary Embolism in the pulmonary artery and more lung blood clots,” wrote his wife Aventer in an Instagram post. “The Saddle PE is in a position that could potentially end his life if it shifts at all.”
“The clot burden is severe and only God is holding it in place. He is currently in CCU and based on CT & Echo we will need two types of surgery due to the pressure now on the heart within the next 24 hours. To place this in perspective, the doctor said that people have come into the hospital dead with this exact scenario he walked in with.”
From his hospital room on Sunday both Gray and his wife spoke to Relentless members via live video and phone calls.
“My husband is fighting for his life right now. And I have no idea how I’m able to sit here in front of a camera and speak to you other than the God that I serve,” Aventer said.
“I know that in this moment, God is saying that this blood clot that has come to my husband may be here to add to his testimony but it does not have permission to take him out. He’s God’s son. Only God has permission to speak a thing and to act on it,” she added.
Aventer—who called on all in the faith community to pray for a miracle— said that she had been concerned about her 47-year old husband’s health given a work schedule that had him commuting between the two church campuses weekly.
“I believe God for complete healing,” her husband told the church by phone. “It has been the great honor of my life to pastor this church,” he continued. I say this as you all are sowing today. I want you to sow at a level of faith and a level of expectation you’ve never had before because I can tell you that this was an illegal transaction from Hell and it will not stand. And since the enemy tried to steal my life, he owes me sevenfold.”
According to medical experts, saddle pulmonary embolisms are survivable and yet represent a risk for sudden death. Recovery can take weeks or months, but most will make a full recovery.
